My OTTB's First EXPO!
I brought Nelson to his very first expo this weekend at the Minnesota Horse Expo! As a horse trainer, my biggest priority was that Nelson has a good experience in a big environment and he did so well and I couldn't be happier. This is a good thing to keep in mind with OTTBs
Training a horse to canter can still be emotional for them, especially if they're an OTTB. Using transitions to build confidence, balance, and trust is one of my favorite ways to introduce canter on the ground. Does your horse make commotion? Full video on Patreon!
Training a horse to do a specific motion rather than make commotion is a small but important distinction. This can be the difference between an emotional canter transition and a relaxed one. Have you made the mistake of chasing your horse before?
Horse training isn't about trying to tire your horse out, it's about getting to his mind so you can have a conversation. This leads to a deeper understanding with your horses. Have you taught your horse how to side pass?
Training a horse to side pass under saddle is easy if you teach them on the ground first and then let the pattern do the work. It's easy to make this mistake
When training horses it's easy to get attached to one tool or technique, but being flexible in your own training process can be helpful to work where the horse is at. This is how I approach cantering a green horse
Training a horse to canter can be tricky. Often the horse can get emotional or speedy but using this approach let's them understand your cue better and gain confidence in the transition.
